Outside the passenger door, a trail of bent grass led away from the car and into the night. Raising the gun to eye level, I began following it. It had become eerily quiet. I could no longer hear the distant sound of fighting, and the night was a still as ever. Unnerved by the stillness, I cautiously made my way further into the field. My steps on the dried, winter grass sounded like gun shots, even to my ears. I snapped my head toward a small sound to my right.
